Notes about Notebooks (Notes from the Artist March 24, 2026)

Lianna Vigil·Apr 21, 2026· 2 minutes

This weekend I was going through my old Studio Journals to track progress but I couldn't figure out the last half of 2024. I couldn't remember any details on what I was working on for six whole months. Did I do any art or courses or anything at all? I felt like I had a case of missing time and was questioning everything about myself. I had two books that detailed the first two quarters of the year and then...nothing. I panicked and couldn't even remember if I had started a notebook or what had even happened. I ruminated about it for 2 days until I came across the missing book. It was safe and sound and I felt better knowing I had recorded the end of 2024 to my satisfaction.

That is the year (2024) where I felt I had made so much progress and accomplished so much and I am relieved to know it is documented because the last half of the year was a blur. These notebooks contain all my Studio notes of what I was working on and thoughts and things I learned as well as color studies and creative outbursts so I love keeping them up to date.

Last year (2025), I changed my methods to use a combination of the bullet journals mixed with my Traveler's Notebooks but it does feel a bit fragmented.  Also since most of the fun is in the TN, it makes the Bullet Journal a bit boring since it is mostly notes and details. I am still working on a process for this year but I suspect I will finish the book I started last year if I am lucky. Documenting this way is a visual reminder that I was busy and I love re-reading my musings and seeing the directions I was taking.

Do you keep a studio journal or another type of journal? What format do you use and do you change it up?  I'd love to learn more about your documentation style. Please email me or tag me on Insta
